Camera and contact prints on a table

Pl. 01  Contact sheets from the handover shoot

Art direction written as instructions rather than atmosphere, so the next shoot without us still looks like the brand.

The launch photography is never the problem. The problem is the shoot eighteen months later, booked by someone who was not there, with a photographer we have never met and a budget a third of the size.

So the deliverable is not a set of images. It is a set of instructions that produces images.

Writing the direction

Mood boards do not survive contact with a different photographer. They communicate a feeling and leave every decision open, which is exactly the wrong way round for a team that has to repeat the work.

What we write instead is specific to the point of being boring:

Time of day and weather, stated as a range with a fallback

Lens and distance, with a reason attached to each

What people are doing — a task, never a pose

Three things that must never appear in frame

The exclusions do more than the inclusions. They are also the only part anyone remembers.

Write it so that a photographer who dislikes you could still deliver the brand.

The reference set

Alongside the instructions we hand over twenty images from our own shoot, annotated with why each one works and, more usefully, six that did not make it with the reason written on them. Rejects teach faster than selects.

We also shoot deliberately imperfect frames for the reference set — the version with the slightly wrong light, the one where the subject is aware of the camera. Without those the standard reads as unattainable, and the next team stops trying to meet it.

The whole package is eleven pages. The last version we wrote before this approach was sixty, and it was used once.

Testing the instructions

We commission a second, cheaper shoot before handover, with a photographer who has not worked on the project, using only the written direction. We do not attend. What comes back is the honest test of the document, and the first time we ran it the results were unusable in a way that was entirely our fault.

The fix was three sentences about distance. That is generally the shape of it — the gap is never conceptual, it is a measurement nobody wrote down.

What we would do differently

Give the client the raw files from the original shoot. We used to hand over selects only, on the reasonable ground that the rejects were rejected. In practice the next team needs to see the range, and withholding it makes the brand look like a style rather than a set of decisions.
